Juneteenth 2025: Are Banks and Post Offices Open or Closed?

Bharat — June 19, 2025 at 6:04 AM

Juneteenth 2025 falls on Thursday June 19 and if you need to hit the bank or mail a package you’ll want to plan ahead. Most banks and post offices will be closed for the federal holiday but some services like UPS and FedEx stay open. Read on to know what’s open what’s closed and how to manage your errands.

What Is Juneteenth and Why Does It Matter?

Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when Union troops led by Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger reached Galveston Texas to announce the end of slavery freeing over 250000 enslaved Black Americans. It’s called America’s Second Independence Day and became a federal holiday in 2021 when President Joe Biden signed it into law. The holiday’s always on June 19 and this year it’s a Thursday which means closures for many federal and state services.

I remember last year trying to mail a birthday gift on Juneteenth and finding my local post office dark. It’s a holiday that shuts down a lot but also brings communities together with parades and cookouts. Knowing what’s open saves you a wasted trip.

Are Banks Open on Juneteenth 2025?

Most major banks will be closed on June 19 because Juneteenth is a Federal Reserve holiday. That means no in-person transactions at branches of:

  1. Bank of America
  2. Wells Fargo
  3. JPMorgan Chase
  4. CitiBank
  5. PNC
  6. Truist
  7. Capital One (but Capital One Cafes stay open)

If you need cash or a deposit try ATMs or online banking which work 24/7. For example I once used my bank’s app to transfer funds on a holiday and it was seamless. Check your bank’s website for specific ATM locations or mobile features to avoid headaches.

Is the Post Office Open on Juneteenth 2025?

The U.S. Postal Service will be closed on June 19. That means no mail delivery no package drop-offs and no retail services at post offices. If you’re expecting a letter or sending a bill it’ll wait until Friday. But Priority Mail Express runs 365 days a year so if it’s urgent you’ve got that option.
