Severe storms have left over 100,000 CenterPoint Energy customers without power across Houston and Southeast Texas as of early Tuesday morning, May 27, 2025. The outages are primarily due to high winds, heavy rainfall, and downed trees affecting the region.
Current Outage Status
As of 4:50 a.m., CenterPoint Energy reported that 102,425 customers were without power. Entergy Texas also reported 26,106 customers affected. The outages are widespread, with significant impacts in areas such as Magnolia, Cypress, and parts of Harris County.
Recovery Efforts and Infrastructure Improvements
In response to previous storm-related outages, CenterPoint Energy has completed the second phase of its Greater Houston Resiliency Initiative. This phase included the installation of over 26,000 stronger utility poles, clearing 6,000 miles of vegetation from power lines, deployment of 5,000 automated grid devices, and the undergrounding of 400 miles of power lines. These efforts aim to enhance the resilience of the electrical infrastructure and reduce the duration of power outages during severe weather events.
Enhanced Outage Tracker
Following previous issues with its outage tracker during past storms, CenterPoint Energy has transitioned to a cloud-based platform capable of handling over 20 million simultaneous users. The new system provides real-time updates every five minutes and includes features such as estimated restoration times and outage reporting. It is available in both English and Spanish to better serve the community.

Safety Tips During Outages
Stay Away from Downed Power Lines: Always assume that downed lines are live. Maintain a safe distance and report them immediately to CenterPoint Energy.
Use Flashlights, Not Candles: To reduce the risk of fire, use flashlights for lighting.
Keep Refrigerators and Freezers Closed: This helps preserve food during extended outages.
Have a Backup Power Plan: If you rely on medical equipment that requires electricity, ensure you have a backup power source.
CenterPoint Energy is actively working to restore power and minimize disruptions. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and exercise caution during the recovery process.
