As of May 25, 2025, India is experiencing a gradual uptick in COVID-19 cases, particularly in states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Delhi. Health authorities have identified new variants, including NB.1.8.1 and LF.7, contributing to the rise. Despite the increase, officials emphasize that most cases are mild and manageable at home.
Current COVID-19 Situation in India
According to the Union Health Ministry, the country has reported 257 active COVID-19 cases as of May 19, 2025. Kerala accounts for 95 cases, Tamil Nadu 66, and Maharashtra 56. Delhi has reported 23 new cases, prompting the government to issue advisories to hospitals to ensure preparedness with adequate beds, oxygen supplies, and medications.
Emergence of New Variants
The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) has detected new COVID-19 variants in the country. One case of the NB.1.8.1 variant was identified in Tamil Nadu in April, while four cases of the LF.7 variant were found in Gujarat in May. These variants are also contributing to surges in countries like China and Hong Kong.
The World Health Organization (WHO) currently classifies these variants as “Variants Under Monitoring,” indicating a low global public health risk. Existing vaccines are expected to remain effective against these variants.
Government Response and Public Health Measures
In response to the rising cases, Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava conducted a review meeting with top officials, including representatives from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). The meeting aimed to assess the situation and strategize appropriate responses to manage and contain the virus’s spread effectively.
State governments are also taking proactive measures. Karnataka has issued advisories urging public caution, while Delhi has directed hospitals to prepare for potential case surges. In Indore, Madhya Pradesh, four new cases were reported within 24 hours, raising concerns about the JN.1 variant’s presence.
